Fire Prevention Division

The mission of the Fire Prevention Division is to reduce preventable fires and injuries throughout the City of Sullivan. We take a proactive, educational approach to community risk reduction — partnering with residents, business owners, and community leaders to create a safer environment for everyone.

Core Functions

  • Code Enforcement: Inspecting new and existing buildings for compliance with local and state fire codes.

  • Education Programs: Providing outreach and training to schools, businesses, and community groups to promote fire safety awareness.

  • Fire Investigations: Determining the origin and cause of fires to prevent future incidents.

The majority of Sullivan’s property owners share our goal of preventing unnecessary injuries and property loss and are active partners in maintaining safety throughout the community.

Community Engagement

Beyond emergency response, the Sullivan Fire Department is deeply involved in the community. We host fire prevention programs, station tours, and school visits throughout the year. Our goal is not only to respond when emergencies happen — but to help prevent them in the first place.

If your school, business, or organization would like to schedule a visit or request fire safety education materials, please contact our team at 812-268-5837 or email.

Fire Prevention Services

Our Fire Prevention Division also performs a variety of essential services that protect lives and property:

  • New Construction Reviews: Working closely with other City departments to review plans and conduct inspections to ensure proper fire code compliance and emergency access.

  • Annual Business Inspections: Inspecting all commercial buildings and businesses at least once a year to confirm code compliance.

  • Educational Outreach: Tracking fire and injury trends and developing new programs to address emerging risks.

  • Fire Investigations: Identifying the source and cause of fires to improve prevention strategies.

  • Pre-Incident Planning: Managing data that gives front-line crews critical information during emergency responses, allowing for faster, safer mitigation.
