Community Development & Recreation Director

The Community Development & Recreation Director will be responsible for managing and leading the operations of the City of Sullivan Parks & Recreation department, and City Redevelopment Commission with a focus on new and current recreation initiatives. This position will be a liaison for city re-development projects and county projects that leads with a problem-solving approach to department needs. They will provide both external and internal customers communication that is clear and effective, with a focus on continuous improvement and help coordinate and respond to daily recreational and re-development needs and issues throughout the Sullivan County Community. The Community Development & Recreation Director will aide in facilitating workflow, operational decisions, as well as planning and organizational development initiatives. The position helps ensure the success of  the department’s vision and provides leadership on communications of complex and high-profile projects as well as ongoing processes involving multiple work groups, other city and county departments and external partners, as well as being committed to fundraising efforts to assist all departments and community organizations  with their budget needs. This person will act as a liaison to lead, facilitate, and collaborate with a diverse variety of organizations and projects throughout the county.

  • Contribute to the strategic growth and operation throughout the County of Sullivan, while providing support to the City of Sullivan Parks & Recreation department through leading, facilitating, and/or collaborating with a diverse organizations and projects, both internally and externally.

  • Manage and direct operations of the department’s recreation offerings and responsibilities, while providing direction and ensuring repots are accountable for effective management.

  • Directing work quality (annual work and performance planning) setting standards and expectations relating to facility and program management and service impact.

  • Administering recreation budget, including general, non-reverting, capital and grant funds, monitoring revenue and expenditure records, and ensuring cost-effective operations within assigned budget.

  • Ensure responsiveness and continuous improvement of the recreation facets of the department and responds to public queries and provides information and direction as needed.

This is a salary position with a base pay of $45,000 yearly. Some evenings/weekends required.


Education and/or job experience in recreation, business, or related field.


  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills including diplomacy, listening, verbal, written, presentation and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to discuss and work well in a variety of areas and appropriately address complex technical and administrative issues, develop feasible alternatives, and explain options to the Park Recreation Board, Planning Board, City Council, associates and the general public.

  • A track record of solving problems and resolving issues in difficult, complex and/or contentious situations.

  • Demonstrated history of producing high quality results relative to work plans, operations, and initiatives.

  • Excellent employee management and development skills.
